Kids? Education: A Way to Brim the Child with Knowledge
“Education would be much more effective if its purpose was to ensure that by the time they leave school every boy and girl should know how much they do not know, and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it”. William Haley predicted the future of education years ago. Most people would agree with the fact of that education is the key to a better life, but many children are still not going to school even though it stands as a fundamental right. The right to free education as directed by the Government of India, still remains as a right and has not been put to use by several children in the rural areas of India.
Visit the markets or stand at the bus stops on an afternoon. Despite the crowd and the noise, the streets are busy with children running behind vehicles and carrying luggage to earn money for their livelihood.
Children who are working on the street are all supposed to be in school getting education instead of making a quick buck at the bus station. Education is not a cup of tea for common man as it is too costly. Often, the children are forced to work because their parents cannot afford education as it is too much costly. It therefore becomes easy for them to refuse, to send them to school.
“I was on my way to a school, but then one day my father said I shouldn’t go again,” said a 12-year old boy. “I was still going even though he said I should stop. So, he tried using the cane to stop me. My mom, who was interested in my education, took me to her mother’s home in order to help me pursue my education. Then my mom died, leaving me alone. So, when my mom died, I went back to my father’s home. Then, my father denied me, so I moved to my brother’s place. Then, my brother too went to a place in order to get some money for my education.”
Other children too have similar stories. “My mom is not doing anything, she has no money,” said a 14 year old boy. “I don’t know my dad. When it comes to chop money, my mom says she has no money. She used to manage to pay my fees, but later she couldn’t do anything, so I had to drop from school and I’m now working here in the station.”
The Indian government is making education free then there would be no more school fees, so education should be affordable for these poor children whose parent can’t afford education. But many teachers of Primary school still say that many children are still not coming because the cost of uniforms, notebooks and pencils is too much.
“Because of poverty, some of them can’t get the means to them. Some of them because of school uniforms, some of them exercise books, [one time] the child said she had no school uniform so she can’t come to school again. They drop out. Some of them drop out saying they are going to learn because they can’t afford the fee for a school here.” With education becoming too costly these days the common man is not able to afford the education only high class people will able to get the education.
